Illinois...

Well, I never thought I would say this but we are currently living in ILLINOIS! Seems as though we have been living all along the border of Iowa. In Maryville, MO we lived about 30 minutes from Iowa and now we live 2 minutes away from Iowa. Actually, only a bridge over the Mississippi River separates us from the state we love!

How did we get to Illinois?
Well, to make a long story short Nate's freshman roommate, Collin, became a lifelong friend. As we got to know his family through the years, we all became family. Collin and his family are from Geneseo, Illinois which is about 20 minutes from Iowa border. When Nate decided to go to Chiropractic school in Davenport we decided to try and find a place to live with Collin as he was working for his uncle's Roofing and Granite company in Davenport. Our goal was to find a reasonable house or apartment to rent in Davenport.

BUT...

At a Bearcat game this fall, Collin's grandma, Sherry, pulled me to the side to talk with me. She mentioned to me that she had a house on the shore of the Mississippi River on the Illinois side. She continued to inform me that she only stayed at the house in the summer otherwise she stayed at her house in Florida. Grandma Sherry ended by saying "I would love to open my house to you, Nate, and Collin." I instantly gave her a hug, as it was a HUGE sigh of relief. Prior to talking with Grandma Sherry, I had been searching online for apartments but found it hard without having a chance to visit.

To Grandma Sherry- We cannot thank you enough for providing a home for us while we find an apartment. You are a blessing to us! Not only did you provide a shelter for us, it is a beautiful home and location! :)
It is so refreshing to know that we can rest in the strength and comfort that God will provide. "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

Here are some pictures of where we are currently living...

The amazing Kitchen + our "roommate" Collin :) working? or talking to Brittany? Hmm

Kind of dark, but this is the upstairs living room, so beautiful

Our walk-in closet! Yes it is full, and no you can't see all of it :)
Our bathroom downstairs
Our huge bedroom
Our downstairs Oasis! This is where we hang out most of the time! Walks out to patio
My favorite view! The beautiful view from the kitchen/living room of the Mississippi River. You can see the lock and dam too!

Well as you can we are spoiled to be living here! Thanks again Grandma Sherry!
Now all we need are visitors! :)

Football...

November 24, 2012 was a sad day. This day marked the end of hard work, dedication, preparation, hours of watching film, morning meetings, lifting weights, running, drills, teammates, and memories. The past four years Nate put 110% into BEARCAT football. He focused his mind and effort on his teammates and coaches.

BEARCAT history-
Freshman Season-2008- Shoulder surgery, learned Bearcat defense, looked up to Miles Burnsides (safety)

Red-Shirt Freshman Season-2009- Played end of a few games, Bearcats Win National Championship in Florence, Alabama.Played in three games ... had two tackles vs. Missouri Southern (10/10) ...MIAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll member

Sophomore Season-2010- Traveled to away games Played in six games ... had five total tackles ... recorded three solo tackles ..broke up two passes, one against Missouri Southern (10/9), one against Fort Hays State (10/30)

Junior Season-2011- Started every game, lost to Pitt State 3rd round playoffs LStarted in 12 games in the Bearcat secondary … finished the season with 32 tackles … recovered three fumbles on the year including two in the season opener at Truman State … returned one of the fumbles 22-yards for his first touchdown of his career in the blowout win over the Bulldogs … also recorded three pass breakups on the year

Senior Season-2012- Captain, started every game, 7 interceptions, 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-American Academic, 1st Team All-American, 1st Team All-Region (Can't remember all the awards, sorry Nate)
More Stats to come.

Needless to say, Nate had a great career as a Northwest Missouri State BEARCAT. Not only did he end his career playing the game he loves, but he met lifelong friends along the way. As it was hard for him to say goodbye to football, he remembers the good times and is grateful he had the opportunity to play.

Once a BEARCAT, Always a BEARCAT!

Great Season, Great Career
Love you!

Nasty...

I love my husband. I really do. However, right now I do NOT love his facial hair.  He decided after our wedding that he was going to grow his beard and mustache out until the season was over. Yes, our wedding was in May, and yes the season is done around December. Yikes, 7 months!!!!  To be honest, it kinda creeps me out. What do you think???

Oh and he sits on the couch and plays with it EVERY night! Blah!

 Be honest...
Yes, I am TRYING to pull it out!!!!!

I will say, if the beard means the Bearcats keep winning, I will suck it up, hands down!
Here we come Alabama! Go Cats!

Good Luck...

So...the Bearcats had lost their first away game of the season so I thought something needed to change. I decided I would make Monkey Bread for the boys for the away games as an incentive to WIN! Knock on wood, so far, so good! October consists of ONLY away games, so there will be lots of Monkey Bread!
Here is my recipe!

Good Luck Monkey Bread
Cut 3 tubes of buttermilk biscuits into small pieces. Roll small pieces in cinnamon sugar mix (just put a bunch of sugar in a bowl and add cinnamon until you like the taste) After covering biscuits in cinnamon sugar, place in greased 9x13 pan.
On the stove, melt 1 stick of butter  with 1 cup of brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of milk. Stir well until the mixture comes to a quick boil. Pour mixture over biscuits.
Place in preheated 350ยบ oven for approximately 20-30 minutes. You really just have to watch and keep checking up on it. Whenever the biscuits are golden brown, it will be done!
After biscuits are golden brown take out a cookie sheet and FLIP the 9x13 pan onto cookie sheet. Leave it flipped over for approximately 5-10 minutes to allow all the yummy goo to ooze down! Enjoy! J

Yum!!!

It has begun...

Football season has begun. It is our favorite time of the year. Fall leaves, warm chili, family and friends, and football season. Nothing gets better than that! We are especially excited this year as it is Nate's final season playing Bearcat football. He is such a great teammate, leader, and captain of his team. Here is an article that highlights Nate as senior, captain, and #21 :)

Bearcat Football 2012
Safety Nate DeJong enters his final season at safety at Northwest Missouri State as a changed man.
Well, his core principles are still intact. His work ethic is unquestioned, and DeJong is willing to help the younger players get better.
“He is great with the young guys, and that is something I really try to get across to our older guys,” Northwest coach Adam Dorrel said. “I always see him coaching the young guys up. That’s something I really appreciate from him.”
As Dorrel said these words after practice early Tuesday afternoon, he looked at DeJong and his growing beard and his leaner body and talked about the change that only a married can understand.
“He got married,” Dorrel said. “That was the big thing for him this summer.”
On May 26, in their hometown of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Nate DeJong married his high school sweetheart, Sabrina.
Sabrina, who graduated last spring from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, might be one reason DeJong has shed a few pounds while adding muscle mass.
“It is nice coming home to a nice, cooked meal after practice instead of making my instant whatever for the night,” DeJong said.
The trait that quickly comes across when talking to DeJong is his willingness to give others credit.
A year ago DeJong finally got his chance of extended playing time after spending three seasons in the program. He started 12 games, recorded 32 tackles, recovered three fumbles, including one that led to his first collegiate touchdown.
Obviously, DeJong put the things he learned the previous three seasons to use and took advantage of his opportunity.
While DeJong mentioned the part about making good use of the opportunity, he gave credit to secondary coach Ken Gordon for the success he enjoyed a year ago.
“Last year I got my turn. I like to thank Coach Gordon a lot for the things he did,” DeJong said. “The way he coaches definitely benefitted me. I like to give a lot of credit to him.”
And to Dorrel’s eyes, DeJong is in better shape than he was a year ago. DeJong admits he is in the best shape he has been in since joining Northwest in 2008.
DeJong, though, didn’t talk about all the running and weight lifting he did this summer.
Instead, DeJong praised the work of Joe Quinlin, Northwest’s strength and conditioning coach.
“I think Joe did a great job with us this summer,” DeJong said. “Of all my years of being here, this is the best shape I’ve been in going into the season. I feel good. I am trying to get some speed. That is the leaning up part.”
This senior class is no different from any other at Northwest. They want to go out with a national championship.
A year ago, the Bearcats had a fine season by most Division II football programs’ standards. Northwest finished 11-3 overall and advanced to the quarterfinals in the Division II playoffs.
But two of those losses came against rival Pittsburg State and the last one was the most painful. The Bearcats fell to the Gorillas in the quarterfinals. Pittsburg State went on to win the Division II crown.
“If you need any more incentive than that then I don’t know what else can drive you,” DeJong said. “We strive to be on top every year. Seeing your most hated rival win it like that, it pretty much lights a fire. If it doesn’t light a fire you shouldn’t be a Northwest Bearcat.”
The thing that has made Northwest so successful year after year is its ability to focus on the immediate task at hand.
Presently, the Bearcats are getting prepared for a long season and slowly implementing the game plan for the home opener against East Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m., Aug. 30 at Bearcat Stadium. East Central is a non-conference opponent.
Northwest will play three of the four new teams joining the conference this season so the schedule is different from previous years.
“I’m excited about it,” DeJong said. “There will be some new offenses for us to see and some new defenses for our offense to face. Let’s see what they bring. I really don’t know much about them.”
DeJong does know about the Northwest defense. He is like a lot of his teammates who started on defense for the first time a year ago. They gained valuable experience while winning.
“I expect a lot. I’d say the sky is the limit for our D,” DeJong said. “We added a lot of new guys last year and a lot of those guys are back. I expect us to be the backbone of the team.”
DeJong is definitely one of the defensive players the coaching staff is counting on.
“He had a great season last year,” Dorrel said. “He does a great job of being really physical. He tackles in space and plays the run. He does a good job of not getting beat deep.
“He’s a great leader. He’s a team captain. He’s a great student-athlete.”
And he’s happily married to his high school sweetheart. DeJong has put himself in position to have his most enjoyable season at Northwest.
(Don't ask me about the beard)

So proud!!!!

Shake, Shake, Shake...

A few weeks after Nate and I got engaged I had the idea of wanting to do a surprise wedding dance. I knew that I wanted our first dance to be normal and not a surprise dance so I started to think what about the wedding party. Well of course when I get an idea in my head I put all my effort towards it. I began talking to my friends seeing what their reaction would be. They were all in. So the planning began. I would love to say it was so easy and fast but it was difficult and took some time. I took about 8 songs and cut them into a mixed CD. I then asked my bridesmaid and dancer, Shelby, if she could help with the moves. She did so much hard work. I give her ALOT of the credit. As of rehearsal time on Friday night the whole wedding party had not practiced the dance altogether. And...the boys had never practiced or heard the song. To make a long story short, after rehearsal dinner Curtis Eben opened the High School gym for us and we practiced the song for about 2 hours. It was so much fun and the boys were having a blast. They came up with most of the moves on the spot, it was impressive. And the rest is history. We surprised everyone, including my mom who THOUGHT she knew about everything with the wedding (but she didn't :)Anyway, watch for yourself as we had a blast and surprised our audience. We even did an encore later in the night because we had so many requests!

Every time I watch the dance I laugh at something different! So fun!!!
